All Systems Red
by Martha Wells
This is a Kindle Single that I picked up because it looked neat. You shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but I totally did. Don't judge me.
The story is told from the perspective of Murderbot, a sentient AI bot that was programmed to be a security guard for a bunch of scientists on a planet. The problem? It hacked its governor module, meaning it didn't have to follow orders. The story takes off when Murderbot (and the scientists) discover that someone is out to get them. Why? How? What's going on here?
Murderbot has no idea, and its love of streaming soap opera videos isn't helping much. The hunt is on.
The story is short and sweet, but it's entertaining as well. Wells does a great job of capturing the perspective of a robot, especially the confusion one might have in the face of human emotion and priority. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and have added Martha Wells to my list of authors to keep an eye out for new books.
