Defy the Stars

Defy the Stars - Book #1

by

I describe this book as Battlestar Galactica-lite. This is a near-future Earth where we have ruined our planet through terrible environmental processes. Earth itself is basically unlivable, so humanity has had to spread to the stars through wormholes known as Gates. There are five planets, including Genesis, a planet taken over by settlers seeking religious freedom. It's a Garden of Eden-style planet, and Earth wants it very badly -- but Genesis is willing to fight back.

The trouble is that Earth has robots -- 25 models, to be exact. The Charlies and Queens are the soldiers, and they flow through the gate interminably, attacking Genesis and pushing the religious inhabitants of Genesis to the edge of desperation.

When the book begins, Genesis is preparing a suicide run against the Gate, hoping to disable it for long enough to prepare for all-out war. One of the heroes of the suicide run is Noemi Vidal. Unbeknownst to anyone else, there's a robot on an abandoned ship just outside the gate... and he's the 26th model (technically the first model) known as Abel.

And he's special. Very special.

I don't want to give too much away, but the story centers around Noemi and Abel's meeting and subsequent adventure as their totally opposing motivations and desires lead them down a common path toward... well, what do you think?

Check it out. You won't regret it.
