The Lady Astronaut of Mars

The Lady Astronaut of Mars

THE LADY ASTRONAUT OF MARS by Mary Robinette Kowal is a short story that I've been hearing about for quite some time. She recently released THE CALCULATING STARS, which is getting good reviews, so I decided to finally pick up this short story to get some context.

It's short. Really short. It's about Elma York, the Lady Astronaut and one of the first people on Mars, who is now in her 60s. She would love to go back to space, but due to her age and public status, it's unlikely. Even as she dreams of going to space, her beloved husband, Nathaniel, is dying. Inside, she is torn apart between her dreams and her love.

It's an incredibly touching story, and I loved it. It's one of my favorite short stories right now, so much so that as soon as I finished it, I picked up THE CALCULATING STARS, and I can't wait to read it.
