Pines

Wayward Pines - Book #1

by

Secret Service agent Ethan Burke wakes up by a river, with no memory of how he got there. A cursory examination of his surroundings puts him in the small town of Wayward Pines, where he was headed during an investigation. As his memories return, he quickly realizes something odd is going on with the town. Why can't he leave? Where are his colleagues? Why isn't his boss returning his call, or his wife answering the phone?

The plot thickens... a bit too predictably.

I enjoy a good mystery as much as anyone else, but this book is essentially an episode of The Twilight Zone with a sprinkle of Eureka (sans comedy). I won't ruin the mystery for you, but the town's secret isn't quite as mindblowing as the author intends.

It's an enjoyable quick read, and FOX has picked it up for a TV series, so it's a good choice if you're stuck on a plane for a few hours or if you just read a lot.

My advice? Buy it while it's on sale.

I'm debating whether to finish the trilogy, in hopes that the sequels make the story more fleshed out. We'll see.
