Witchlands - Book #1

Imagine a world with witches. Not green witches or necessarily evil witches, but Windwitches and Firewitches and Poisonwitches and even Ironwitches, witches that can manipulate the forces that match up with their names. In this world there's are other special kinds of witches: Voidwitches that are generally considered evil, Truthwitches with the ability to detect falsehoods, and Threadwitches with the ability to see the Life Threads of all living creatures.

Two friends, Safi and Iseult, are two such witches, and it turns out they have a part to play in the tapestry of the world.

I won't spoil the plot too much, but I will say it's a fine beginning to what promises to be an epic adventure. Susan Dennard did a masterful job of creating not only a world with magic, but with believable political intrigue, complete with backstabbing, warfare, epic sea monsters, and even a bit of love.

For a random pick from Amazon's bookshelf, this was a promising one. If you enjoy the myriad magic systems and worlds created by Brandon Sanderson, you'll also enjoy Truthwitch by Susan Dennard.
